Clarence D. Ferguson, 88, of Cumberland died on December 19, 2025, after a long illness. He
was born on August 12, 1937, to the late Herbert and Stella Ferguson of Cumberland. Clarence
was reared and a lifelong resident of the Guinea community of Cumberland County. He is
survived by his sister, Lucille Ferguson, of Farmville, and his devoted caregivers Jamie Bryant
and Stacey Helton.
Clarence graduated from Longwood College with a teaching degree in Secondary Education
and from N. C. State with a Horticultural degree. He served his country in the Air National Guard
before returning home to farm. He was a dairy, beef, and grain farmer along with running the
community general store after his father’s death. Every Saturday night local farmers gathered
around the potbellied stove to discuss community events, politics, weather, and farming.
When Clarence wasn’t busy with farming duties, he diligently worked in his flowers and with his
exotic fish aquarium. He was known for his Spring garden which he loved to show to visitors
and anybody that passed by. He placed flowers in Centenary and Guinea Churches each
Sunday for years. He was a member of Centenary Church where he taught Sunday School for
over 50 years.
Clarence was the first in the community to have a computer system that he used to monitor the
stock market, grain futures, coffee and orange juice prices which he used in trading on the
Chicago Borad of Trade. He also had extensive knowledge of agricultural programs that were
administered by Farm Services Agency.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 17 th at 2pm at Guinea Presbyterian
Church, 1176 Guinea Road, Farmville, VA 23901.
