Hazel Barden

March 8, 1923 — May 15, 2013

Mrs. Hazel Bray Barden, 90 of Rice passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 in Farmville.  She was born March 8, 1923 in Union Level, VA to the late William Robert and Nannie Tricky Bray.  She graduated Lawrenceville High School in 1941. She was the widow of William Nelson “Doc” Barden.  Mrs. Barden worked at the shoe factory and as a quality inspector for Stackpole.
She loved her friends at River Ridge, flower gardening, fishing and especially camping at Lake Gaston.  Mrs. Barden enjoyed playing the piano and painting.  She loved people and never met a stranger.  She was preceded in death by her husband, granddaughter, Melissa Carroll Spillman, sisters, Esther Crocker, Matilda Kohout and Nan Britt and her brother, Jack Bray.

She is survived by her children, William Wayne Clayton (Fran) of Cumberland, Robert Sterling Clayton of Suffolk, Gordon Ray Clayton (Cathy) of La Crosse, VA, Nancy Clayton Moorefield (Bodie) of Cumberland, Brenda Clayton Nine (Theodore) of Youngsville, NC and Janet Clayton Loeser (Helmut) of Rice.  Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013 2:00pm at Grove United Methodist Church in Cumberland.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Association.
