Rebecca Duncan

d. November 10, 2013

Mrs. Rebecca M. Duncan of Farmville, age 76, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2013 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Mark Breen of Glen Allen, VA. Mrs. Duncan was the daughter of the late Daisy Atkinson McMillan Morris and John Wesley McMillan Jr. and step daughter of the late Andrew Meredith Morris. Mrs. Duncan settled in Farmville with her daughter in 1966 to take a position with Longwood College. She took early retirement in 1995 to care for her ailing mother.
Becky, as she was known to friends, was a selfless and compassionate soul whose generosity knew no limits. She viewed life with a child-like wonderment, ever observant of the tiniest of things that others might overlook, taking great joy in nature, animals, and the outdoors. She was feisty and fun, independent and stubborn, kind and caring, sweet and strong, wise and witty, but above all a proper Southern lady whose life was firmly rooted in faith. Somehow, she seemed to always know the right things to say, regardless of the situation, providing immeasurable comfort to those around her. When she said “Bless your heart” you knew she meant it in the very best way. When she asked” How are you” you knew she genuinely wanted to know. She was always there to lend a helping hand to neighbors and friends. Though she had only one child by birth, she was considered by many to be a second mother with her soothing ways and sage advice, thereby fulfilling her dream of having a large family.
Her attitude toward the cancer, which eventually claimed her life, was remarkable and inspiring. She would often tell others that despite the horrific pain she endured for more than a year; those final months were the most beautiful of her life as she was able to spend it at home surrounded by the love of family and friends.
Survivors include her beloved daughter, Betsy Ann Duncan Foster Breen and husband Mark Breen of Glen Allen: a much loved grandson, Andrew Michael Foster of Richmond; her cousin, Mrs. Ann Rhem Schwarzmann of North Carolina; another cousin, Mrs. Mary Lou Wolsey of Minnesota; children of the heart, Wilson Troxell and family of Woodstock, VA; Dennis Hevener and family of Georgia; and many dear and beloved friends too numerous to list.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 4:00PM at the Farmville United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow in the social hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Farmville United Methodist church, F.A.C.E.S. of Farmville or the charity of your choice.
