Virginia Baker Welch, 96, of Pamplin, Virginia, died Wednesday, March 25, 2026. She was the
wife of Paschal Ewart Welch. She was an active member of Spring Creek Baptist Church and
later an active member of Elon Baptist Church. She helped with life on the farm including dairy
and tobacco. She also grew a vegetable garden – canning and freezing the fruits produced. She
provided encouragement and kindness to those around her. Her concern for others was
evident as she offered wise counsel to family members and friends.
Born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, on February 26, 1930, she was the daughter of James
Temple Baker and Mary Elizabeth “Bessie” Foster.
Virginia is survived by three children, James Paschal Welch and wife Susan Carole of Roanoke,
George Ewart Welch and wife Penny of Pamplin, and Virginia “Ginger” Ann Welch of Pamplin;
six grandchildren, Lydia Campbell (Troy), Erin Weisgram, Lee Welch, Amy Welch, Daniel Welch
(Tessa), Emily Welch and friend Tommy Blankinship; five great grandchildren, Aidan, Harrison,
Brynne, Maddy, and Logan.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Nellie Johnson, Elizabeth Phelps, Anne Beasley, and
one brother William R. Baker.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service which will be held at 2 p.m.
Monday, March 30,2026, at Shorter Funeral Home in Farmville, Virginia. Rev. Steve Tyree will
officiate the service. Burial will follow in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice, Virginia.
